The original UNI purple and gold for the web was chosen around 2000, after testing of a variety of monitors and platforms. Back then, monitors were predominantly CRTs. Today, with a solid shift to LCD monitors and laptops, the original UNI purple isn't as true to the print purple as we'd like. Furthermore, most monitors can go outside the gamut of the original 256 "web safe" colors. Research has again been conducted, and a new purple has been selected for the web, to replace the original web purple as UNI web developers make updates to their sites. There is no change to the UNI gold web color. Here are the official UNI web colors:
RGB: R=75, G=17, B=111
RGB: R=255, G=204, B=0
The color combinations of black and gold or red and gold should never be used in close proximity to each other on the UNI web site. Those are the colors of the University of Iowa and Iowa State University.
